India is considering extending maternity

NEW DELHI -- India is considering extending maternity leave to 24 weeks from 12 weeks, a government official said on Friday, adding that it would encourage more women to breastfeed and help reduce high rates of child malnutrition in the country.

"We feel the current three months is not enough time for women to adequately care for their newborns," said an official from the ministry of women and child development.

The proposal, if approved, would give working women in all sectors -- public, private and even the informal sector such as domestic workers -- some kind of protection.

According to the ministry, an expectant mother needs one month of rest before birth, and seven months after, to adequately nurse her child, said the official, who declined to be named.

India has one of the highest child malnutrition rates in the world. Forty-six percent of children under five are underweight and 48 percent are stunted, according to the latest government figures from 2005/6.

Child malnutrition is an underlying cause of death for 3 million children around the world every year - nearly half of all child deaths - with most dying from preventable illnesses due to weak immune systems, says the United Nations Children's Fund.

Those who survive, grow up without enough energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, causing their brains and bodies to be stunted which means they cannot fulfill their physical, academic or economic potential.

The World Health Organization (WHO) - which recommends exclusive breastfeeding for babies up to six months old - says breastfeeding reduces child mortality and has proven health benefits that extend into adulthood.

Yet only 47 percent of Indian mothers exclusively breastfeed for the first six months, compared with 70 percent in neighbouring Nepal and 76 percent in Sri Lanka.

Gender experts say extending maternity leave will also encourage more women to return to work and close the gender gap in the labour market. Many women reluctantly drop out of work because they need more time for their newborns, they say.

A Loving Mother And A Sex Worker Living In Denmark Meet Bonnie

This is Bonnie Cleo Andersen. She's the mother of Michella, who is 16 years old; Oliver, who is 15; and Noa, who is six. She is also a self-professed prostitute, working legally in a small house in a village in the east of Denmark.

"I first met Bonnie while I was doing a project on my final semester of school," photographer Marie Hald explained in an email to The Huffington Post. "We were given totally free boundaries to start a project. I had always been interested in the subject of prostitution, since it is a legal profession in Denmark. I was mostly interested in finding a woman who wasn't the typical stereotype of a prostitute. What I really wanted to find was a woman with a family, living a 'normal' life. And so I found Bonnie."

Hald found Bonnie from a website and soon got in contact with her. She went to visit her at the brothel where Bonnie worked, and the two talked for hours. "In between our talking, customers came in," Hald said, "and so I just sat there eating chocolate while hearing her 'work.' That was a wild start."

Over the course of the following year, Hald followed Bonnie and recorded the intimate details of her life, both personal and professional. She discovered, for instance, that while Noa thinks his mom Work as a housekeeper, the older children know the truth, and are often bullied as a result during school.

Through this period she became close with Bonnie's entire family, learning their hopes, goals and fears. "Bonnie's goal with participating in my project was to show the world that she is a whole person, not just her profession. Her number one aim in life is being a good mother for her children."

Hald's photographic portrait captures the many roles Bonnie embodies in a single day -- mother, friend, sex worker, human being. The images, simultaneously brutal and beautiful, depict a life filled with hardship, pain and love. Although a number of the images capture the explicit details of sex work often kept behind closed doors, many offer mundane and touching moments between family and friends that look, above all else, familiar.

"I want people to get a look into a world that is not normally open for people to see. I have tried to show Bonnie's life as honest as I could, brutal as it may be."

Gym Teacher, Charged With 30 Counts Of Statutory Rape

                       A former basketball coach and gym teacher at a prestigious New York City

 high school faces statutory rape charges for her alleged sex abuse of a male student.

                       Megan Mahoney, 24, was arrested Monday for allegedly having regular sexual

 contact with the same 16-year-old student over a period of more than two months

beginning in late October 2013, the Staten Island Advance reports.

                       In January, Mahoney resigned from Moore Catholic High School in Staten

Island, where she taught gym and was an assistant coach for the women's basketball

team.

                       Investigators said that some of the encounters happened on school grounds.

 In August, the victim told the New York Post that the illicit relationship began shortly after

 Mahoney allegedly approached him in the gym and offered to coach him in basketball.

                      “We would just drive around and  in the car,” the boy, whose name was

withheld, told the newspaper.

                      Richard Postiglione, the Moore's athletic director, was also investigated for

allegedly failing to report sex abuse accusations against Mahoney and another female

teacher at the school.

                      Before she was a coach, Mahoney was also a student athlete, playing

basketball for Fordham University and Wagner College.  more >>

Jennifer Lopez's Daughter Emme Looks Just Like Her In Precious Instagram Photo

Just hours after the 45-year-old mother of two shared a selfie on Instagram Tuesday ...

... her 5-year-old daughter Emme took a cue from mom and snapped a photo of herself in the same aviator shades and fur coat:

This isn't the first time Lopez's daughter has shared her glamorous mom's interest in high fashion. Back in 2012, the singer took Emme to Paris Fashion Week, where the two enjoyed front row seats at the Chanel show:

More Arrests In Ferguson, Missouri After Protests Turn Violent

Police in Ferguson, Mo., arrested a number of protesters late Thursday night after a scuffle broke out while Police Chief Tom Jackson was walking with the crowd,KMOV.com reported.

According to CNN, Jackson was about to make a statement around 11 p.m. when a scuffle broke out behind him.

Officers responded by pushing demonstrators back across the street and making arrests:

Earlier in the day, Jackson released a video in which he apologized for the way theMichael Brown case, and ensuing protests, had been handled.

"The right of the people to peacefully assemble is what the police are here to protect. If anyone who was peacefully exercising that right is upset and angry, I feel responsible and I'm sorry," Jackson stated.

Despite this effort, protesters gathered in downtown Ferguson called for Jackson's resignation.

The exact number of protesters who were arrested was not released.

Brown, 18, was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. The case is currently before a grand jury in St. Louis County, and under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Since the shooting, the mostly black community has seen weeks of racially charged protests and bursts of violence. Demonstrators have vowed to continue protestinguntil Wilson is arrested and charged in Brown's death, Reuters reported.
